What is moving backward?

A planet is called retrograde when its apparent geocentric longitude decreases. It does not reverse its physical orbit. The effect arises from the relative motion of Earth and the planet. Asteria estimates direction using positions twelve hours before and after the selected instant.

A symbolic reading

Many modern astrologers associate retrogrades with revision, internalization, or returning to unfinished work. These are interpretive themes, not causal scientific findings. Mercury retrograde does not require canceling a trip, a relationship, or a necessary decision.

Natal and transiting

A natal retrograde describes a placement in a birth chart; a current retrograde describes the sky now. Personal transits compare current planets to natal placements. Context and the specific planets matter more than a broad retrograde headline.
